5 Tips for National Pet Hydration Month
At PUPS Pet Club, keeping your pet healthy, safe, and happy is at the heart of everything we do — and that includes keeping them hydrated, especially during the hot summer months. That’s why we’re highlighting National Pet Hydration Month this July — a time to raise awareness about how critical water intake is for your dog’s overall health and how to prevent heat-related issues.
Whether your pup is at home lounging by the fan or playing with friends in daycare, hydration plays a big role in their well-being. Below are five essential ways you can support your pet during National Pet Hydration Month.
1. Offer Fresh, Clean Water Regularly
This may sound like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how quickly a water bowl can get low or dirty — especially in the heat. Make sure your dog has access to fresh, clean water at all times, and refresh their bowl multiple times a day. If your pup is at daycare with us, don’t worry — we refill water bowls throughout the day and make sure pups have access to hydration after play sessions.
2. Watch Their Water Intake
Keep an eye on how much your dog is drinking. While increased thirst during hot months is normal, sudden decreases in water intake can be a red flag. Similarly, excessive drinking could indicate an underlying issue like heat exhaustion or illness. Tracking your pup’s habits helps you catch early warning signs and stay ahead of problems.
3. Keep Outside Time Short and Sweet
We all love a good sunny stroll, but when temperatures soar, less is more. Try walking your dog in the early morning or evening when it’s cooler, and limit outside time during peak heat hours. At PUPS Pet Club, we adjust our outdoor routines to keep pups cool and offer plenty of shady, splash-worthy play zones when the temps climb.
4. Know the Signs of Dehydration
Recognizing dehydration early can prevent a trip to the vet. Signs to watch for:
– Dry or sticky gums
– Sunken eyes
– Lethargy
– Excessive panting
– Loss of skin elasticity (gently pinch the skin at the back of the neck — if it doesn’t snap back quickly, your dog may be dehydrated)
If you notice any of these symptoms, offer water immediately and contact your vet if they persist.
5. Know the Signs of Heatstroke
Heatstroke is a serious medical emergency and can escalate quickly in dogs. Symptoms include:
– Rapid heartbeat
– Vomiting
– Collapse
– Bright red gums or tongue
– Confusion or disorientation
If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a cool area, wet them down with cool (not cold) water, and contact a vet immediately. Prevention is key — limit high-energy activities during the heat of the day and ensure they always have access to shade and water.
At PUPS Pet Club, we take pet hydration seriously. From climate-controlled playrooms to constant access to clean water and cooling enrichment activities, we create a space where pups stay safe and comfortable — no matter the weather.
